“Yesterday, when I was young…” was often how my Dad would, and still does, start the telling of a story of his youth. When I was a kid of 7, 10…18 (?!?) years old, I thought this was the most ludicrous thing ever! I mean seriously, yesterday? Hardly! My dad was an ancient 40 years old when I was 8. As if that time could go by in, well, a blink of an eye! Flash forward 20 years and here I am…hopefully 10 years away from being an “ancient” parent myself…and we all know how fast 10 years go by, I mean – I just got married yesterday, in April 2001. And it was maybe a week or so ago that I was in grade 1 myself…
I got to relive a glimpse of my youth while watching my daughter and her friends on their field trip last week Wednesday. The excitement, the giggles, clamour for attention, hand-clapping games, silly (but cute) antics…the NOISE! Field Trip day was always the climax of the school year – a day that was looked forward to for weeks in advance. And nothing’s changed.
Jaedah’s class went first to Safeway for a grand tour; ending with the best part, a Vanilla bean frap. Then to the library, lunch and play time in the sun at a park, and then to the Blue Heron Reserve. I’d heard rather dismal things about the trip to the BHR, but it was GREAT! I’ve been there before, but never with a guide, and this lady was fantastic!! Her enthusiastic chattering had me straining to see the spitbugs, salmon fry and frogs etc!! The kids loved her, and the walk around the reserve. If only we’d had more time there, because it was such a sunny afternoon and there was sooo much to see….

I can’t believe there’s only a few more weeks of school before summer holidays are here! I’d better make use of these last few days of routine, ignore all those folders of un-edited pictures on my computer, and get to work…because yesterday (in the real sense of the word) I was rather unmotivated and now have heaps of laundry to trudge through as a result.
Cheers!
